The Townsville Hospital Foundation administers approximately 110 volunteers..
The Townsville Hospital Foundation’s volunteers have varied roles within the hospital, these include:
- Information counter, and hospital guides. These volunteers escort patients to their appointments within the hospital. They also guide friends and family of patients who are visiting the various wards.
- Oncology volunteers provide cups of tea, coffee, biscuits and light conversation for patients, visitors and friends who are waiting in the Radiation Clinic, Day Unit and Chemotherapy Clinic.
- Women & Children’s Clinics have volunteers who conduct playgroup sessions. These volunteers entertain the children while they are waiting to see the doctor.
- Cardiac/Medical Clinics, and Transit Lounge – our volunteers provide tea and coffee, tidy magazines and chat to patients while they wait for their appointments.
- Facials and hand massages are provided free of charge to inpatients on Wednesday of each week by 2 very special volunteers.
- Courtesy Golf Buggies operate 5 days a week from 8am – 4.30pm. Our volunteer drivers pick up patients and visitors from Red Cross House, Ronald MacDonald House and Leukaemia Village (accommodation houses on the campus), and patrol the car park looking for anyone who needs transport to, or from the hospital doors.
- School tours are booked through the hospital, and 2 trained volunteers escort the children, teachers and some parents through the Hyperbaric Unit, the Children’s Ward and one of the operating theatres. This is always well received by everyone concerned because it helps to ally the children’s fear of hospitals.
- Musical volunteers visit the hospital on a regular basis and entertain the patients. The music provided by these volunteers is always appreciated by the staff and patients alike.
